2-(Diethylamino)-2-phenylacetonitrile is a quaternary ammonium salt that is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, and Gram negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. 2-(Diethylamino)-2-phenylacetonitrile also has pharmacological effects on the central nervous system and can be used to treat hypoglycemia. This compound is soluble in both water and organic solvents. Solvent dilution reduces its toxicity by converting it into an inactive form.
