Performance of Polyquaternium-67 in Cosmetic and Personal Care Products

Lochhead, Robert Y. Polymeric delivery of therapeutics (2010): 3-22.

Polyquaternium-67 is a hydrophobically modified cationic hydroxyethylcellulose. This type of polymer has a degree of polymerization of 4,000-10,000 anhydroglucose units and a hydrophobic degree of substitution of 0.0008-0.08 moles per anhydroglucose ring, providing enhanced deposition of cosmetic oils from body wash formulations.
Polyquaternium-67 can be used as a preferred thickener for zinc deposition compositions. Zinc is the second most abundant trace metal in the human body and, due to its inclusion in metalloenzymes, it catalyzes nearly every biochemical process in the human system. Zinc has been used to treat skin diseases for more than 3,000 years. Consumer acceptance of surfactant-based zinc-containing topical products is affected by the product rheology, requiring the addition of a thickener to achieve the desired rheology. Anionic thickeners are generally not used for such compounds because they bind to the metal. Therefore, cationic or nonionic thickeners are preferred thickeners; however, polyquaternium-67 is suitable for this purpose.
