A level of antistatic performance and sufficiently optical transparency are required for mobile device displays. Among them, a wet coating technique using ionic compounds, typically quaternary ammonium salts as the anti-static agents are recognized to be one of the most important class of methods because of its high effectiveness at low cost.

For small-molecule quaternary ammonium salts, the structure contains hydrophilic and lipophilic groups, which migrate from the interior to the surface due to incompatibility with the material itself. Under certain humidity conditions, the hydrophilic groups are easily connected to the air through hydrogen bonds. The moisture combines to form a conductive channel, allowing the electrostatic charge to escape to reduce the surface resistivity. While the polymer quaternary ammonium salts, the dense arrangement will be formed on the surface after being added to the material. Since the surface concentration is higher than the interior, the hydrophilic group will face the air and be oriented on the interface to form a conductive compound, thereby penetrates the network to achieve antistatic effect.
