Synthesis of Dual-Active-Site Mesoporous Carbon (CoSx@NMC) Using Polyquaternium-44

CoSx@NMC is derived from Fe/Co dual-tuned nitrogen-sulfur polymer as carbon precursor, showing discrete dual active centers and good bifunctional catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER).
Synthesis of CoSx@NMC
1. Polyquaternium-44 5.63 g containing nitrogen, sulfur and carbon as precursors was added to 15 ml 1.0 M hydrochloric acid solution and ultrasonically stirred for 10 min to obtain polymer dispersion, and then hydrochloric acid solution of FeSO4 7H2O and CoSO4 7H2O (FeSO4 7H2O 3.75 g, CoSO4 7H2O 1.79 g, Fe:Co mass ratio of about 2:1) was added and stirred for 10 min.
2. The mixed dispersion of polymer and metal salt was slowly added to the previous nano silica colloidal solution under continuous magnetic stirring.
3. The obtained mixed solution was then stirred continuously for about 5 h and dried at 85 °C for 48 h. The obtained solid product was completely crushed into powder and pyrolyzed at 800 min for 1 h in a nitrogen atmosphere with a heating rate of 20 °C/min.
4. In order to remove nano-silica, the pyrolyzed product was soaked in 4 M sodium hydroxide for 48 h under continuous stirring, and then the excess sodium hydroxide was washed with deionized water and dried overnight.
5. The excess unreacted metal salt was washed with 0.5 M H2SO4 at 85 °C for 8 h, then washed with deionized water to neutrality, and pyrolyzed at 800 °C for 1 h to remove residual impurities. Finally, the target catalyst CoSx@NMC was obtained.
