Polyquaternium-5 is a copolymer of acrylamide/trimethylaminoethyl methacrylate with a very high molecular weight (4 x 106) that provides excellent lubrication and glide into hair care products.
It exhibits excellent glide properties at low use levels (0.1-0.25% as supplied). It also exhibits good wet feel and dry feel during/after use. Improved wet and dry combing, excellent in-use feel, and increased manageability of the hair. It also enhances lather and interacts with keratin to provide good conditioning. The polymer is claimed to not interact with anionic surfactants due to its very low cationic charge density of 0.2 meq/g. The presence of the ester group in the quat-side chain limits its use to a pH range of 3-7, while higher pH values begin to degrade the cationic portion of the polymer over time.
